Ankylosing spondylitis
Ankylosing spondylitis or AS, is a form of arthritis that mainly affects the spine, even though other joints can happen to be involved. It causes inflammation of the spinal vertebrae that can lead to severe pain and discomfort. There is no cure for ankylosing spondylitis, but treatments can decrease your symptoms and perhaps slow progression of the disease. Symptoms: AS can also cause inflammation, pain, and stiffness in other areas of the body such as the hips, shoulders, ribs, heels, and other small joints of the hands and feet. Risk factors: Gender. Men are more prone to develop ankylosing spondylitis than are women. Age. Start usually occurs in late adolescence or early adulthood. Heredity. Most people who have ankylosing spondylitis have the HLA-B27 gene present. But many people who have this gene never build up ankylosing spondylitis.
